One Step at a Time
At 15, John left high school and began moving between friends’ couches, shelters, and his car. Although he found occasional part-time work, lasting stability remained out of reach. He had always dreamed of becoming a carpenter, but without a GED or diploma, he could not apply for a carpentry apprenticeship. Then, while visiting Life House, John spotted a flyer for Boreal Development’s apprenticeship readiness program and decided to take a chance and apply.

John thrived in the program, earning every available certificate: OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety, CPR/First Aid, and Lead Safe Renovator. He went on to complete his Multi-Craft Core Curriculum credential. At the same time, with our case manager's support, he began working toward his GED through Duluth Adult Education. Because he left school at such a young age, completing it will take time, but John remains committed.
In the meantime, John has secured a full-time job with a local drywall installer, gaining valuable hands-on experience while continuing to pursue his GED. Each step is bringing him closer to his goal of entering a carpentry apprenticeship.
