Hands-On Training!

This week, our apprenticeship readiness trainees are hard at work on a weatherization project at Vita Nova's transitional housing facility in Observation Hill. The project is funded through a Clean Energy Resource Teams grant. Vita Nova had been dealing with very high utility bills at this 120-year-old triplex and wanted to better understand where energy was being lost. With support from the grant, they were able to complete an energy assessment and start addressing some of the issues it uncovered.

Vita Nova brought in Ecolibrium3 to carry out the assessment, and Boreal Development participants had the chance to observe the process firsthand. The assessment revealed a number of places where air was escaping, including around windows and doors, along rim joists, and through nearly every spot where pipes or cables passed through the exterior walls.

After reviewing the recommendations with Ron, our Construction Trainer, Boreal Development participants got to work putting several of them into action with his guidance and support. The photos below highlight some of the work they have been doing.

Installing a new storm door

Caulking and insulating around windows and other gaps and openings

After completing all of this work yesterday, the crew is back on the job at Vita Nova again today. Stay tuned for more photos!
